Maha Ashtami Special Grand Worship of Goddess Mahagauri
The worship of Goddess Mahagauri is performed with elaborate rituals on the day of Maha Ashtami. According to mythological legends, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for thousands of years to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to exposure to wind, sun, rain, and dust during this penance, her skin turned dark. When Lord Shiva became extremely pleased with her devotion, he bathed the Goddess with the holy waters of the Ganges. Upon touching the sacred water, the Goddess's body became extremely radiant, fair (white), and beautiful. Ever since, she has been known as 'Mahagauri'.
This puja is not merely a religious ritual, but a festival of soul purification. It includes special recitations of Durga Saptashati, Mahahawan, mantra chanting, and Kanya Pujan. Through this ritual, negative energies in the devotee's life are dispelled, welcoming auspicious and sattvic powers.
