The Mahamrityunjaya *Japa* (chanting) and *Puja* (ritual worship) are considered among the most powerful and effective forms of worship of Lord Shiva in Sanatan Dharma. This ritual is primarily performed alongside the chanting of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, as described in the Yajurveda.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam |

Urvarukam-iva Bandhanan Mrityor-Mukshiya Mamritat ||

Meaning: We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva, who is fragrant and nourishes all living beings. Just as a ripe melon is liberated from the bond of the vine, may we be liberated from the cycle of death and birth and attain immortality (*Moksha*).

Relief from serious illnesses: This chant is performed to aid the recovery of a person who has been ill for a long time or is hospitalized.

Protection against untimely death: This vow is undertaken to avert accidents, fear, or potential crises.

Alleviation of mental stress and fear: It provides relief from depression, negative energy, and nameless fears.

Mitigation of planetary afflictions: It reduces the adverse effects of *Markesh* (a planet causing suffering akin to death) or the inauspicious influence of the *Mahadasha* (major planetary period) of Saturn or Rahu in one's horoscope.

Precise Pronunciation: The syllables of this mantra must be pronounced with absolute precision; incorrect pronunciation can lead to adverse effects. Therefore, it is considered best to have the chanting performed by a qualified Brahmin.

Sattvic Observances: Throughout the period that the chanting is being performed on your behalf, it is mandatory to maintain a Sattvic atmosphere at home (abstaining from meat and alcohol, and observing celibacy).

Presence of a Shivling: The presence of a Shivling at the place of worship is essential, as is the regular performance of *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) using water or milk.

Location: While this puja can be performed at home, it is considered highly auspicious to conduct it at Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain), Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Trimbakeshwar (Nashik), or any Jyotirlinga or Shiva temple.

Auspicious Days: The month of Shravan, Mahashivratri, any Monday, or the day of Pradosh Vrat are considered the best times to begin this puja.
