Shreya Ghoshal

Shreya Ghoshal is widely regarded as one of the most successful, versatile, and celebrated playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Often hailed as the "Nightingale of Modern India" and the "Queen of Melody," her career spans over two decades, during which she has recorded thousands of songs across more than 20 Indian and international languages.

Known for her pristine vocal control, expressive pitch perfection, and deep understanding of classical Indian music, Shreya Ghoshal has redefined playback singing in Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood, and regional Indian music industries.

Shreya Ghoshal was born into a Bengali Hindu family in Murshidabad, West Bengal. Her father, Bishwajit Ghoshal, was a nuclear power plant engineer working for the Atomic Energy Corporation of India, and her mother, Sarmistha Ghoshal, is a literature post-graduate.

Shreya grew up in the small township of Rawatbhata near Kota, Rajasthan. Her musical journey began at the age of four under the guidance of her mother, who taught her basic vocal exercises and classical notes. Recognizing her extraordinary talent, her parents enrolled her in formal training in Hindustani Classical Music.

Formal Vocal Training: She trained under Mahesh Chandra Sharma in Rawatbhata and later pursued advanced classical music training under Ustad Kalyanji Bhai (of the legendary duo Kalyanji-Anandji) and Ustad Mukhtar Ahmed in Mumbai.

Early Recognition: In 1996, at the age of 12, she won the prestigious children's special TV talent contest Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) on Zee TV. She returned to win the main adult season in 2000, catching the attention of prominent music directors and film directors.

The Breakthrough: Devdas (2002)

Shreya Ghoshal's monumental Bollywood entry happened when filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and music director Ismail Darbar noticed her performance in Sa Re Ga Ma. Bhansali offered her the voice of Paro (played by Aishwarya Rai) in the grand musical drama Devdas (2002).

She recorded five songs for the album,including: - Dola Re Dola (with Kavita Krishnamurthy), Bairi Piya ,Silsila Ye Yeena Ka , Morey Piya

The album became a massive success. At just 18 years old, Shreya won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, and the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for her work in the film.
