Anantnag: Gateway to South Kashmir’s Serenity
Anantnag, also known historically as Islamabad, is a significant city in Jammu and Kashmir both culturally and economically. It serves as the commercial hub of South Kashmir and is surrounded by lush meadows, crystal-clear springs, and ancient temples. The name "Anantnag" is derived from the Sanskrit term for "abode of countless springs", and true to its name, the city and its surrounding areas such as Verinag, Achabal, and Kokernag are dotted with natural water springs that add to the region’s charm. Anantnag is also a major base for the Amarnath Yatra and holds religious importance for both Hindus and Muslims. The Martand Sun Temple, though now in ruins, is an architectural marvel of ancient Kashmir.
Anantnag is a gem of South Kashmir that offers a refreshing mix of nature, history, and spirituality. Its springs and gardens are perfect for nature lovers, while its ancient temples and pilgrimage routes attract devotees and historians alike.
