More About Shivaharkaray Shaktipeeth
According to legend, the father of the demon king Mahishasura was an asura named Rambha. Rambha fell in love with a buffalo who lived in the water. Mahishasura was born in the union of Rambha and Buffalo. For this reason, Mahishasura could change the form of buffalo and humans as per his wish. It is said that Mahishasura obtained a boon from the creator Brahma by performing severe penance. Brahmadev gave a boon that no god or demon would be able to conquer him. After getting a boon from Brahmadev, Mahishasura started creating havoc in the heavenly world. One day Mahishasura attacked heaven. Mahishasura defeated Indra and captured heaven. He drove all the gods out of there. Troubled by this, all the gods went to Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh and told them their problem. But due to the boon of Brahma ji, even Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh themselves could not defeat Mahishasura. Ultimately, all the gods created Maa Durga to kill Mahishasura. Shakti Punj came out from the body of the trinity and gathered. This Shakti Puja took the form of Maa Durga. All the gods gave their respective powers and weapons to Maa Durga. Maa Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine consecutive days and killed him on the tenth day. This is the reason why Durga Puja is celebrated for nine days in Hinduism. At the same time, the tenth day is known as Vijayadashami. Mother Durga was named Mahishasud Mardini because of Mahishasura's Mardan.
