More About Sravani Shaktipeeth
The goddess, known as Kumari Amman, was born to King Bharat as his daughter. A demon, Banasura, sought immortality from Brahma and was granted the power to only be killed by a virgin girl. As Banasura caused havoc on earth, the gods turned to Maa Bhagwati for help. The goddess incarnated as Kumari, and her kingdom was in the south. She desired Shiva as her husband, and after performing penance, Shiva agreed to marry her. However, the gods, fearing Banasura's defeat, used Narad Muni's trick to delay Shiva's arrival. When Banasura attempted to marry Kumari, she killed him in anger, remaining unmarried and ruling her kingdom, earning the name Kanyakumari.
