The name Guhyeshwari originates from the Sanskrit words Guhya (meaning "secret") and Ishwari (meaning "Goddess"). In the sacred Lalitha Sahasranama, the 707th name of the Goddess is Guhyarupini, which signifies that her form transcends human perception and is a divine secret. Another belief ties the name to the secret 16th syllable of the Shodashi Mantra. Guheshwari is one of the Shakti Peethas, sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati’s body are said to have fallen. Here, it is believed that Mata Sati’s Hips fell, and the Goddess is worshipped as Mahamaya (the great illusion) or Mahashira (the great head), while Lord Shiva is revered as Kapali, symbolizing his aspect as the lord of cremation grounds.
