The Mythology of Jagannath Puri
King Indradyumna of Avanti, guided by a divine dream from Lord Vishnu, set out to build a temple at Nilachala (now Puri). He sought a sacred idol, Nila Madhava, worshipped by the Sabara tribals, and retrieved it with the help of his minister. However, the tribals, grieving the loss, invoked Vishnu, who instructed the king to carve new idols from a divine log washed ashore.
The carving of the idols—Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra—remained unfinished as the sculptors mysteriously vanished. The king consecrated the idols, which symbolize a divine presence beyond human form.
The temple’s most famous event, the Ratha Yatra, is a grand procession of the deities on chariots, symbolizing God's journey to his devotees. The Jagannath Temple, known for its mystical properties, attracts pilgrims worldwide, embodying divine grace and universal accessibility.
