Durgapur – The Steel City of Bengal
Durgapur, located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, is a planned industrial city developed in the 1950s as part of India’s post-independence modernization effort. It is home to the Durgapur Steel Plant, a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), and remains a key industrial base in eastern India.
The city is also known for its excellent educational infrastructure, including NIT Durgapur, and various technical and management institutes.
Despite its industrial backbone, Durgapur is green and organized, with parks, lakes, and modern facilities. Tourists can enjoy trotting around Troika Park, boating at Durgapur Barrage, or shopping at Junction Mall. Its location on NH2 and proximity to major towns like Asansol and Kolkata make it easily accessible.
