The Kankalitala Shaktipeeth is dedicated to Goddess Sati, one of the 51 Shaktipeeths across India. According to legend, King Daksha organized a yajna but insulted Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati by not inviting them. Unable to bear the insult, Sati immolated herself in the yajna fire. Lord Shiva, enraged, performed the Tandava, leading Lord Vishnu to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, The waist of Goddess Sati had fallen here.
