More About Baidhyanath Jyotirlinga
Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, located in Deoghar, Jharkhand, is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The legend begins with Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, who performed severe penance to please Shiva, offering his ten heads as a sacrifice. Moved by his devotion, Shiva granted him a boon, allowing Ravana to take a Shiva Lingam to Lanka. However, the gods, fearing Ravana's increasing power, distracted him using Lord Vishnu's illusion, causing Ravana to set the Lingam down temporarily. Once placed on the ground, it became fixed, and Ravana could not lift it, leading to the Lingam being consecrated at the site.
The temple is also associated with another legend of Sati’s body parts falling at various locations, making Baidyanath a Shakti Peetha. The name "Baidyanath" means "the Supreme Healer," as Shiva healed Ravana's pain after his sacrifice. Today, the temple is a significant pilgrimage site, especially during the Shravan month, when millions of devotees undertake the Kanwar Yatra, offering water from the Ganges to the Jyotirlinga. The temple continues to inspire devotion, symbolizing unwavering faith and divine grace.
