More About Mahishmaridini Shaktipeeth
Once upon a time, a tragic event unfolded as Lord Vishnu, in a moment of divine intervention, severed the celestial body of Sati Devi with his Sudarshan Chakra. One of the sacred fragments, believed to be a part of her divine mind, fell to Earth in a mystical region. This sacred spot, now known as Bakreshwar or Vakreshwar, has since become a revered pilgrimage site.
A magnificent temple was erected here to honor the divine energy emanating from this sacred ground. The presiding deity, Devi Mahishmardini, the fierce destroyer of the demon Mahishasura, is worshipped with utmost devotion. Her consort, Bhairav Vakranath, stands as a protector, ensuring the sanctity of the place.
The region is blessed with the serene beauty of the Phaphra River, believed to possess the power to absolve sins. Seven sacred hot springs, each associated with a unique Shiva Linga, surround the area, drawing pilgrims from far and wide.
Legend has it that the great sage Ashtabakra, once disfigured by anger, sought redemption through rigorous penance. He journeyed to Kashi and was guided to Bakreshwar, where he meditated for ten thousand years. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him a divine boon, ensuring that he would be worshipped before the Lord himself. In gratitude, Vishwakarma, the divine architect, constructed a magnificent temple in honor of the sage, forever linking Bakreshwar with the legend of Ashtabakra.
